Our overarching goal

To inspire third grade students in all Arizona schools to accelerate their reading and increase achievement, using the excitement around the Final Four® to spike their interest.

How the competition worked

This literacy challenge was open to all third grade classes across the state. The competition was at the school level, based upon average time spent reading among third grade students.

The three-month competition, which mimics the March Madness® bracket, allowed schools to advance in the competition by number of minutes read. Schools competed against each other and one school was crowned champion at Final Four® Friday on March 31, 2017.  Regional grouping of schools was determined by the local NCAA Final Four Organizing Committee.

In addition, individual students who were top readers as determined by their time spent reading on the myON platform also were recognized.

All participating third grade classes are receiving:

  • Unlimited, multi-user access to the myON personalized literacy environment containing over 5,500 digital books and literacy tools through August 31, 2017
  • Students are reading online on any web-enabled device and they can download books for offline reading using free mobile apps
  • Flexible, FREE professional development options were offered both onsite or virtually, along with recorded videos and other resources, for all participating teachers
  • Real-time data about reading activity and growth is available for all teachers – and visibility for students to their own data from their dashboards
  • A warm-up period was provided for third graders to get familiar with myON and start accelerating their reading prior to the launch of the program on January 4, 2017

PLUS: Exclusive access to Read to the Final Four Bracket, much like NCAA March Madness® on Selection Sunday, where the leading 68 schools advanced into the competition bracket to win unique prizes
